Teamwork

One of our first experiences working as a volunteer team is in our pre-departure fund-raising initiatives.  The students decided to host a Fun Food Friday pizza and bake sale to help raise money to donate to Outreach 360.  Students planned the menu, contacted the vendor, advertised the sale internally and will bake treats to sell this coming Friday, March 1, 2019.  I look forward to seeing our group sell and serve lunch to the Poly community.

A New Poly GIP Destination

For the past six years, Poly students and teachers have partnered with Outreach360 to teach English to students enrolled in the Learning Center or Camp programs in Jinotega, Nicaragua.   Local children are only provided school for a half-day, so the supplemental teaching offered by O360 is invaluable to helping students learn English and advanced Spanish.  Thankfully the program is continuing with local volunteers and year-round employees, but it was with heavy hearts that we learned we would not be traveling there this year to see how much another year's teaching helped the students' English language skills.  While we hope to again soon visit our friends in Jinotega, Nicaragua, we are excited to make new friends in Monte Cristi.  How exciting it will be to see the original location of Outreach 360 and their lasting impact on the students, families and local community.

We are eagerly preparing for our trip by hearing from a Poly alumni parent who grew up in the DR, by watching a film portrayal of the novel In the Time of Butterflies and by getting to know one another as a group.

More to come.
